Once
described as the
"surfer's
surfer" Mickey
Muñoz has been riding
waves since the Fifties.
Equally adept in both big and
small waves, the Orange County
local won the first
professional surf contest, and
was one of the most decorated
Californian surfers of the
mid-Sixties. He sometime rode
what were astonishingly short,
slight boards for the time,
even breaking out a
6’8” when everyone
else was riding ten footers.
The diminutive, gregarious
Mickey was no less
accomplished in the shaping
bay, whittling foam under the
famous Hobie Surfboards label.
Mickey has shaped thousands of
boards, including translating
his shaping skills into
snowboard design.
