Philip started surfing in 1969 at the age of 14; first on belly and knee boards, and ultimately evolving to a fully upright surfer. He grew up surfing up and down the California coast, with trips to Baja and mainland Mexico.gutt bio                               He started his migration north and received his BA in liberal arts from UC Santa Cruz.                                    The substrate he uses is recycled surfboards. He tiles the top/deck of the boards.    A six foot board has about 3,000 glass pieces and usually takes 60-100 hours to complete depending on the complexity of the design. Any pressure dings from a well-placed surfer's heel that aren't too severe are left untouched. Because of this, there may be a few minor (but authentic!) dips in the tiled surface. The bottom is left in its original condition with some boards having a few dings, gashes and lacerations from their last days in salt water voyages. Most old and unwanted surfboards end up in landfills, so this has been a rewarding way to rescue some of them and pay homage to their previous incarnations and the enjoyment they’ve inspired.

Prices range from $3,500-$5,500 depending on size and complexity.  Please contact Waveriders for more information. 858-539-2680
