BOARD ART

Michelangelo once said, "I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free."

A surfboard shaper/designer does much the same thing; painstakingly whittling a block of foam until everything is taken away but the board. The boards themselves are "working" art, form and function inextricably bound together.

The art of surfboard design itself is an anachronism in the age of automation, the craft passed from shaper from shaper, learned by direct experience, sweat, and error.

Mike doesn't always have a clear idea for his boards until he starts working with the wood. "I allow the naturally occuring colors and grain to spark ideas for feathers, fish, sunlight, water or just free-flowing designs."

A life-long love of surfing mixed with a strong infatuation for mosaic art compelled this artist to devise a way to bring the two together. Phil has been doodling waves on anything and everything for 40 years. The doodles are still the same, only now they are moored in glass tile.

Cherrie’s mosaic glass surfboard sculptures use an iconic form of a recycle surfboard and a range of glass to bring new life to a board that is through with its purpose on the waves!! Each board tells a story from the shaper, to the surfer and finally the artist.
